Union County

October 31, 2014

Not too sure what I was thinking, but I brought both kids with me today just as my run of good weather gave out.  The temperature started out in the 30's and climbed until just after noon when things got misty and colder.  There's a rumor of snow coming and I don't plan on getting caught in it.  This day has been a bit scary since we turned right off of Hwy 53 onto 515.  Before we got to the first winery we saw the first of three major accidents we would see today, all on 515.

Our goal was to visit three wineries and Mercier to see the new addition and get some apples.

After a brief stop at Mercier, we made it over to Odom Springs.  It was obvious that the cold front was not playing games at this point.  Good news is that there is space for the kids to roam and a cat that plays well with rambunctious children.  Odom Springs is a part of the Mountain Wine Country cooperative.  This group includes wineries from Georgia and North Carolina currently. Just as a side note, I really like the aesthetic of their printed materials.

As I was discussing and sampling some wines one of the owners and a friend that was visiting offered the kids some warm apple cider.  They had just begun mulling some wine in the crockpot and things were starting to smell quite nice.  Tastings are $1 a piece.

From what I was told the owner of Crane Creek has been instrumental in getting the wine industry to grow in this area and was a major proponent of getting the AVA approved for the Hiawassee Highlands.  I'll create a separate page for this shortly.

While here I learned about two more wineries in the area.  This is a major part of why I started this blog.  If information were consolidated wineries would be easier to find and the benefit would be positive to all involved.
